Bio

I am an evolutionary anthropologist interested in understanding how patterns of human adaptation have shaped and been shaped by the evolution of our microbiome. Using archaeological dental calculus from prehistoric people, I study how the oral microbiome has evolved in response to resource intensification and the onset of agriculture. I am also interested in how the prehistoric microbiome can inform on disease states and the spread of infectious diseases, as well as how it is shaped by the relatively early occupation of extreme environments by modern humans.
