Bio
Dr. Bowlus’ microbiome research interests are related to the complex interactions between the liver/bile acids, diet, gut inflammation, and intestinal microbes. He is specifically interested in primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), an inflammatory disease of the bile ducts which typically occurs in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and is a paradigm in which to study the gut-liver axis. As a gastroenterologist, he also has access to both normal and disease stool and biopsy samples for use in a variety of human microbiome studies.
